I'm so disappointed, I was hoping for a local mechanic that I could trust.
My chief complaint here is that whomever I talked to, flat-out lied about what was wrong with my car and the cost to fix it. Because I think honesty is absolutely crucial to my relationship with a mechanic, I was no longer interested in having them repair my car. Therefore, please keep in mind, that in this review I can't comment as to the quality of workmanship here. Only the honesty.
I was told that my ball joints, outer tie-rod ends, and sway bars needed to be replaced. When I asked which parts on which side, they told me "all parts on both sides". When I asked how much this would cost, I was told it would be $500-600. However, I knew from previous experience that the cost of all those parts come to about $100 total (and I later confirmed that this is still true). I also knew that other mechanics charge 3 hours labor for this work. Therefore, I guess they were intending to charge me $400-$500 in labor for a three-hour job.
Moreover, they had clearly not even looked at the passenger side, because if they had, they would have discovered that I had a BRAND new outer tie-rod end on that side already.
When I said that $500-600 was out of my price range right now and I was just going to have to wait about a month to get the work done, the man then assured me that they could maybe "do me a favor" and "get my bill down to around $300" if they looked for "used parts". What an outrageous lie! No one bothers to use used ball joints/tie-rod ends/sway bars when each piece costs $25 or less! It wouldn't be worth the cost of labor taking them off! I don't know how they thought they were going to "save me $200-300" on parts that only cost $100 brand new to start with.
I could have forgiven lying about the tie-rod on the one side. Maybe they just looked at one side and assumed that the other looked the same.... But no way can I forgive lying so blatantly about the cost of parts. That guy looked me right in the eye and acted like he was doing me a favor when really he was trying to rip me off.
